What do you think of first when you think of Dr. Seuss? For most people it’s the iconic red and white striped hat from “Cat in the Hat”. That hat, along with the story, is the inspiration for my DIY Dr. Seuss-inspired cake stand.  I paired the finished stand with printable red striped cupcake wrappers and toppers from my Stripes & Dots party collection to continue the theme.

A tall terra-cotta pot and large saucer are the building blocks of my cake stand. Why flower pots? They are sturdy and relatively inexpensive, and with a coupon or two I can make the whole thing for 10-15 bucks.

The How-To

I gave both pieces a few coats of white indoor/outdoor acrylic paint (Patio Paint from DecoArt), Once it was completely dry, I covered the parts of the tall pot that I wanted to stay white with painters’ tape, and gave the pot several coats of red paint.  I also added a red circle to the center of the saucer top.

Once the red paint was also dry, I removed the painters’ tape.  Woohoo!  Red and white Seuss-y stripes!

Fluffy blue trim (a-la Thing 1 and Thing 2) was the finishing touch to my Seuss-inspired cake stand, wrapped around the top of the saucer for a bit of whimsy.  Just a couple dots of glue are fine, since this project can be easily repurposed throughout the year.

  1. That’s brilliant! I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled for a pot that looks like that tall one.

  2. Where did you get that pot? I can’t find one anywhere.

    Thanks for your help.

I made this tonight, and absolutely loved it!

I found the "Terra cotta Long stemed flower pot" at hobby lobby, it was marked at 7.99 but I got it on sale for 3.99!!
The saucer was 5.99 but I had a 40% off coupon and got it for 3.79
The paint was 2.10 each for the 16 ounce containers!
    The brushed were 2 dollars.
The glue and masking tape, I got at a liquidation store for 1.00 each. (I used regular masking tape and it worked fine"
And the boa (fluffy trim) I got was 4.99 and I had my boyfriend use his 40% off coupon and for it for 3 dollars! I also used total blue instead of teal!

I also added a quote to it that says "Oh, the places you’ll go!" (The blue glitter letters that are sticky) I got it 50% off because one of the letters were broken, so that only cost me 3.00!!

So all in all, I spent around $25 for something I would’ve paid 80-100 for on Etsy!!!
It was fun to take this, and adjust it just a little!

Thank you so much for your instructions, it helped so much, especially for somebody like me who doesn’t do many arts and crafts!!!

    1. Megan,
I’m so glad you enjoyed making it, and that you found the tutorial helpful!
